It is the right quest. The point is the guy gives you 2 ice wolf skins as a reward which you can then immediately take and hand in for your own quest. For the Baes quest, if you told people he has a bear in the basement the wolf skin quest auto fails / he won't give it to you if you didn't take it yet.
Once I selected the Gothic II Gold Original downgrade option available on Steam, I was able to patch it normally with Union and it launched fine unless you install the DirectX11 renderer mod to get those prettier, updated graphics ie dynamic lighting.
